With the high price of gas, who couldn't use a scooter, gas or electric?

Scooters - Gas and Electric

Over the past couple of years and with the price of gas hitting all time highs, scooters are really now just coming of age again. scooterraz1 (1K) They originally were a simply toy for kids enjoyment. Scooters, both motorized and foot-propelled, are showing up everywhere. On city streets, airports, factories/businesses and office complexes. scootergas (10K)While scooters are nothing new having last enjoyed the spotlight as recent as the late '80s, they have been redesigned to be sleeker, sturdier and now powered with either an electric motor/battery or a small gas engine. In-line skating may even lose it's craze to this exciting new means of inexpensive transportaion.

There are at least a dozen scooter companies in the market, producing kick versions starting from $20, to the electric powered that go anywhere from $100 on up depending on the amps, or power of the motor. The gas versions have engines that are usually rated by cc's, cubic centimeters of displacement. Most of them fold up for easy transportation and the kick versions weigh between 6 and 10 pounds. The motorized scooters, powered by gasoline or electricity, weigh in the 35 pound range. Some even have seats that can be added or removed scooterraz2 (2K) Besides their fun factor and convenience, the minimal environmental impact of scooters makes them appealing. While gasoline-fueled scooters can go up to 20 miles an hour, electric-powered run at a range of 12 to 17 mph depending on the motor and battery. The gas scooters do have a lot more range on a tank of gas than an electric does on a battery charge. It can take from an hour to few hours to fully charge an electric scooter battery up

scooterequip (2K)Another reason why the scooter may be more than a passing fad is its low cost to run them, especially the kick powered ones. It costs around 3 cents to charge an electric scooter to run 8 miles. A driver's license is not required to operate them but laws vary from different cities or loactions. All scooters should be driven on hard surfaces, and with a helmet. Lights and reflectors are essential for night driving. There should also be some sort of horn or sounding device for emergencies.

segwaypic (1K)Another form of scooter you may have caught a glimps of on or in the news is the Segway. Instead of having the wheels in the front and rear, they are set up side by side. This transport also has a gyro system for assisting the rider with keeping balance as they drive around. It is steered by the rider shifting his weight from side to side, which is quite unique. It's also is very expensive compared to the other types of scooters available as it generally runs somewhere in or close to the $2000 price range. This is not something the average person would buy even though I think most people would like one.

scooterrock1 (2K) Next is the mini gas/elec motor cycle style, also known as (crotch rockets/ pocket bikes). These were take offs from scooters but with the added look are more appealing to many, especially the younger kids. These look just like their bigger counterparts but in miniature. They pretty much function and work the same way as the scooters do and of course come in gas or electric versions. They also vary in price depending on what model and make you purchase. They usually start in the $100-$200 price range and go up from there. scooterrock2 (2K)

That pretty much covers the basic info on scooters, the different types and little bit on pricing. There are lots of links on this page where you can see various models/pricing and even purchase one right from the comfort of your home. You can also find parts for the one you may already own. So, look around and enjoy.
